10 tips for visual artistsI was thinking to myself tonight, "what have I learned so far?" Whenever I start to get down in the dumps about my work/career my husband always says "what would you say to your students if they said the same thing to you?" So in today's post, I try to address a few core things I've learned so far at this point in my career. I'm writing this for my readers, but also for myself as reminders of what's really important as an artist so I myself can stay focused. It's by no means a comprehensive list, I'm sure that I could write a novel about this, but it's what I'm thinking about tonight.

1) Don't burn any bridges.
The person who stood next to you in line at the cafeteria the other day could be in a position to positively impact your career some day, and vice versa. (when I say "cafeteria", this refers to art school/college) It sounds ludicrous, but in my experience it could not be more true.

DeviantArt Premium ContentYesterday, my DeviantArt feed had an announcement about a new beta for their "Premium Content Platform". The short version is they're now providing a way for artists to sell digital downloads, directly from DA. On the face of it, this might seem like a good thing, but I'm not convinced yet.
Below are some of the major points of the service and some of my initial thoughts. This is a beta, though, so things will likely flux and evolve with member feedback. But here's some high-level stuff.
Points
The first thing that jumped out at me was that buyers would not pay cash (via PayPal or whatever) for downloads, but a new form of currency, DA Points. Right away I'm leery of anything requiring "virtual currency". Facebook and Zynga haven't done that concept any favors. And the points currency Xbox Live uses is still baffling to me.

The Good & The BadIntro
So it's been a while since I wrote anything here. That's due to a number of reasons that I don't care to get into right now. But I had this idea last night while falling asleep, and thought it would be fun. I'll list the best 5 features dA has done over the years, and the worst 5 features. I'm sure I could spend months on this and refine it to exactly what I really want to say, but I'm gonna try to spit this out fairly quickly and just list things that first come to mind.

At least I think that's the term for this. Or is it Easy Reply? Way back in the day, version 4 or so, when you clicked the Reply button on comments, it would load the comment you were replying to as a new page, and you put your reply into the textbox there and hit send. But with quick reply, it opened right under the comment, quick and easy. I doubt many people remember those days, but that update was beaut

Foreshortening refers to the visual effect that an object or distance appears shorter than it actually is because it is angled toward the viewer.

DA birthday Contest - 8 Track! (Manga/Anime)

In celebration of DeviantART's 8th birthday, we're holding a contest for the Anime/Manga gallery!

Almost everyone has a favorite album. But have you ever illustrated anything from it?

Since this is DA's 8th birthday, the object of this contest is to pick track #8 from your one of your favorite albums and illustrate it as best as you can!

For example: One of my favorite albums is Breakfast With Girls by the band Self. Track #8 on that album is a song called "Sucker", so I'd try to draw a picture relating to that song. Even throw is some references to the number 8 if you can. Sounds easy, but it can be quite a challenge!

RULES:

Art must be 100% you own work. No tracing, no fan art or fan characters! Even if the song is from a soundtrack from an existing show, movie, etc., please make your art and characters original.

Art should be in anime/manga style. Any medium is welcome, traditional or digital, color or black and white/grayscale. Anime not your style? Check out the other AR-hosted birthday contests listed here: [link]

Please list the name of the artist, album and track name in your description, or include it in the artwork. Otherwise, how do we know what song it came from? If possible, include a link to lyrics or even a playable or downloadable (legal!) copy of the song. It HAS to be track #8 on the album, for DA's 8th birthday!

Upload your piece to Community Projects > Contests > 2008 > DeviantART 8th birthday > 8 Track. If you don't, we won't see your entry!

You can enter two different pieces, though you can only win for one of them. Doesn't hurt to hedge your bets a bit, though.

Contest will be judged on not just technical skill alone, so don't worry if you don't think your art isn't "good enough". We're looking for the most creative entries in interpreting their song choices!
