dA Life #09: Browsing with Mature Content filterWelcome to the ninth dA Life blog, a series created to help you enjoy your time on dA and use it's many tools for sharing your art, appreciating other people's art and taking part in the wonderful community that we have here.
Because deviantART is home to people aged 13-18 as well as adults, we have a Mature Content filter. These FAQ entries explain what the filter is, what it does and how if effects your browsing experience.

You may tag your submission as Mature Content at the time of submission or at a later date by using the Edit function. By doing so your deviation will be concealed behind a special warning thumbnail for anyone who has the Hide Mature Content checkbox selected in their Settings.
If you choose to tag one or more of your deviations as Mature Content you will have a choice between two levels; Strict or aWarning.

DeviantArt Premium ContentYesterday, my DeviantArt feed had an announcement about a new beta for their "Premium Content Platform". The short version is they're now providing a way for artists to sell digital downloads, directly from DA. On the face of it, this might seem like a good thing, but I'm not convinced yet.
Below are some of the major points of the service and some of my initial thoughts. This is a beta, though, so things will likely flux and evolve with member feedback. But here's some high-level stuff.
Points
The first thing that jumped out at me was that buyers would not pay cash (via PayPal or whatever) for downloads, but a new form of currency, DA Points. Right away I'm leery of anything requiring "virtual currency". Facebook and Zynga haven't done that concept any favors. And the points currency Xbox Live uses is still baffling to me.

The Good & The BadIntro
So it's been a while since I wrote anything here. That's due to a number of reasons that I don't care to get into right now. But I had this idea last night while falling asleep, and thought it would be fun. I'll list the best 5 features dA has done over the years, and the worst 5 features. I'm sure I could spend months on this and refine it to exactly what I really want to say, but I'm gonna try to spit this out fairly quickly and just list things that first come to mind.

At least I think that's the term for this. Or is it Easy Reply? Way back in the day, version 4 or so, when you clicked the Reply button on comments, it would load the comment you were replying to as a new page, and you put your reply into the textbox there and hit send. But with quick reply, it opened right under the comment, quick and easy. I doubt many people remember those days, but that update was beaut

Inspiring Watercolor FeatureEver since taking a watercolor class I've started loving the medium more and more. Before taking the class, I didn't think I'd like watercolor because I was so used to acrylics, and I thought of watercolor paintings as boring paint-by-numbers of flowers. After taking the class, I realized how much I love the freedom and flow of the paint, and I've been noticing lots of great paintings in this medium! Day of the Dead - an Anime and Vector gallery collab contest!

Day of the Dead is a Mexican tradition known for its many unique festivities and decorations. Despite the name, Day of the Dead lasts from October 31 to November 2, and is a fun remembrance of ancestors and loved ones. Bright decorations like skulls and marigolds are everywhere, and there's lots of food, dance and celebration. Need to know more? Here are some informative links on the holiday: [link]

This is a contest for both the Anime and Vector gallery to come together to create some great works of art based on a theme of Day of the Dead. We know not every anime artist can vector, and not every vector artist does anime. So now is your chance to meet new artists and team up!

Here are the rules of this contest:

Art must be 100% original creations. No using existing, copyrighted characters! Tracing of copyrighted art will NOT be accepted! Artwork should specifically be created for this contest. Only one entry per deviant.

Using stock imagery is allowed per dA's standards (i.e. all references must be cited/credited properly).

Works must be 100% vector done in a program such as Illustrator, Flash, or Inkscape. Once you bring raster images into a vector, it is no longer a vector, remember that!

Works should incorporate the anime style and Day of the Dead themes.

Collaborations are not necessary for this contest, but are encouraged. Don't know an anime or vector artist, and are interested in participating? Check out this forum: [link] away, and meet up with some great artists!

You can have as many partners as you like to create your piece, but the prizes will be split amongst your group. It's only necessary to upload the piece once to the contest gallery - just make sure to include all the usernames in the description!

Contest will be judged by the gallery mods of Anime and Vector (`lemontea, $Ikue, `Damaged927 and `azarath). We're not just looking for technical skill, but more of the interpretation of the theme and creativity.

Please upload your entries to the following gallery: Contests & Projects -> Contests -> 2008-> Halloween 2008 -> Day of the Dead. If you don't upload them to there, we won't see them! Deadline for the contest is Monday, November 30, 2008, at 11:59PM PST.</b> Please do not ask for extensions on this deadline.

oohhh. this is the first time that i've learned this. our country, (Philippines) is a heavily español-influenced country due to the colonial stuff. we call the event undas but unlike your country's celebration, we put candles everywhere and clean up the dead loved one's tomb, and mostly eat up and stuff.
